Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty)
Blepharoplasty, or an eyelid lift, rejuvenate puffy, tired, or sagging eyes by removing excess fat, skin, and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. Typically a cosmetic procedure, Blepharoplasty has been known to improve vision by lifting droopy eyelids out of the patient's field of vision. While it cannot be used to raise the eyebrows or reduce the appearance of wrinkles, crow's feet, or dark circles under the eyes, the procedure can be combined with others such as a face lift or Botox® treatments to achieve the desired outcome.
The procedure lasts between 45 minutes to a few hours, depending on the extent of the work. It is usually performed in an office with a local anesthesia. To perform the procedure, incisions are made in inconspicuous places along the upper and lower eyelids. The surgeon removes excess tissue through these incisions before closing them with fine sutures. In the event that skin removal is unnecessary, the surgeon may perform a transconjunctival blepharoplasty in which the incision is made inside the lower eyelid and there are no visible scars.
After three or four days, the stitches are ready to be removed. Patients usually are able to return to work after 10 days of recovery. While contact lenses may be worn as soon as two weeks after the procedure, eyes may be sensitive to light and wind. Complications are uncommon, and can include: infection, reaction to anesthesia, double or blurred vision lasting a few days, temporary swelling of the eyelids, tiny whiteheads, and difficulty closing eyes. Rarely, patients experience uneven healing, scarring, or ectropion (pulling down of lower eyelids) that require surgical correction. Patients with thyroid problems, dry eye, high blood pressure, diabetes, detached retina, glaucoma or other health problems should consult with an ophthalmologist before undergoing the procedure.
